Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation Primary Health Care Service (Mulungu) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organization dedicated to delivering high-quality, culturally safe primary health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Position Overview

The Health Promotion Officer - Cancer Care will play a pivotal role in planning, delivering, and evaluating culturally appropriate initiatives aimed at cancer prevention and early detection. This position is integral to increasing participation in cancer screening programs and strengthening referral pathways with both mainstream and community health services, ultimately promoting early detection and prevention among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement cancer prevention programs addressing risk factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, diet, physical activity, and sun safety.
  • Promote national cancer screening programs, including breast, cervical, and bowel screenings, through community outreach.
  • Facilitate workshops and community events to enhance cancer awareness and educate community members.
  • Build strong relationships with community groups, Elders, schools, and local organizations to foster collaboration.
  • Identify and address community needs through consultations and support community-led initiatives that promote healthy lifestyles.
  • Provide guidance on cancer screening pathways and assist individuals in navigating cancer services.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate health promotion projects, ensuring they meet community needs.
  • Advocate for culturally safe cancer care and contribute to organizational strategies related to chronic disease and cancer.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in health promotion and a commitment to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. We are looking for someone who can effectively engage with diverse populations and demonstrate cultural responsiveness.

  • Relevant qualifications in Health Promotion, Public Health, community health, nursing, or a related field.
  • Experience in delivering health promotion programs focused on chronic disease or cancer prevention.
  • Strong understanding of cancer prevention, early detection, and national screening programs.
  • Ability to develop culturally appropriate resources and engage effectively with communities.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and adaptability to changing community needs.
  • Current driver’s license and willingness to travel for outreach.
  • Current Blue Card and Federal Police Check or ability to obtain prior to commencement.
